UMLA Workshops – Every Wednesday at 2pm in room S737

Urban Male Leadership Academy (UMLA) brings people from all walks of life together each week to creatively address issues that affect students and provide UMLA members with resources to help make their  educational and career goals a reality.

During these meetings, participants get to know each other not just as UMLA members but also as a family. Workshop presenters include education professionals, advisors, entrepreneurs, entertainers, executives, UMLA alumni, and current students. Our workshops are open to the public and all BMCC students are encuraged to attend.

During our workshops, we also discuss upcoming trips, exclusive events, academic support and strategies, leadership opportunities, and employment opportunities. We highly encourage students to take advantage of these workshops toenhance their BMCC experience.

Breakthrough New York Hiring Paid Mentors!

Breakthrough New York (BTNY) is hiring for our 2018-2019 cohort of High School Mentors and College Access Mentors!

BTNY’s High School Mentors (HSM) and College Access Mentors (CAM) directly support a small group of grade-specific BTNY students in achieving meaningful milestones on their path to college graduation, including:

  • Planning and teaching college-prep workshops six times per year at Super Saturdays
  • Checking-in and supporting your cohort of students remotely between Super Saturdays (connecting them to academic and social-emotional supports, editing college application essays, finding summer enrichment opportunities, etc.)
  • Tracking and reporting on student data
  • Supporting High School events during the year such as Mock Interview Day and College Decision Day

These are exciting PAID internship opportunities designed for NYC-based college students or recent grads who have an interest in non-profit operations, education, college access, teaching, and mentoring first-generation college students. As part of your compensation, you will receive:

  • base stipend of $1,750 (High School Mentors) or $2,250 (College Access Mentors)
  • Pre-paid Metrocards for travel related to your internship
  • Ongoing professional development support, including PF focused meetings and letters of recommendation

TKTS Apprenticeship Program from the Theater Development Fund (Full-Time Position)

The Theater Development Fund is hiring for its TKTS Apprenticeship Program. This is a full-time salaried opportunity. This opportunity is only for BMCC graduates and those who are graduating this spring/summer. The application opens on May 20th. See info below and attached flyer.

Are you looking for a career on Broadway, but you aren’t a performer? Have you thought about being a Box Office Treasurer? Theatre Development Fund (TDF) is proud to announce its TKTS Apprenticeship Program. The program is designed to provide traditionally underrepresented individuals in the Broadway workforce access to comprehensive box office training and full-time employment opportunities in one of the world’s most well-known ticket-selling operations.

During your 6 month apprenticeship you will learn all of the ticketing systems used in theatre box offices and sporting arenas around NYC while working in our fast-paced Times Square Booth at the heart of Broadway. You will work side by side with professionals as they serve NYC residents and tourists from around the world.

The apprenticeship is full time and salaried, and provides 1/3 of the required hours towards full union membership in the Treasurers and Ticket Sellers Union Local 751.

Apprentices will be mentored by TKTS Supervisors. At the end of the apprenticeship, each participant will receive employment interviews with the three major Broadway theatre owners as well as other Broadway theatres.

CUNY Service Corps – Trip to Puerto Rico! Apply NOW!

In partnership with Governor Andrew Cuomo, CUNY Service Corps is offering students like you the opportunity to play a meaningful role in The New York Stands with Puerto Rico Recovery and Rebuilding Effort. The State of New York is mobilizing students from both CUNY and SUNY to travel to Puerto Rico this summer and work with non-profit organizations already rebuilding on the ground. The Service Corps is looking for motivated, hard-working students to be a part of this service community. If selected as a participating student, you will:

  • Work with skilled trade professionals performing building and construction tasks to help rebuild communities and neighborhoods in Puerto Rico
  • Earn a stipend
  • Earn academic credit
  • Build workplace and community service skills

Interested in Law? Join the CUNY LAW School Pipeline to Justice Summer Program! APPLY ASAP!

Aspiring lawyers and social justice advocates are encouraged to apply to the Pipeline to Justice Pre Law Summer Program, which prepares underrepresented students to enter CUNY School of Law and supports them throughout their law school career. The two-week program also provides free MetroCard and a $450 stipend upon successful completion of the program. You are able to apply as a BMCC/CUNY student. The application window is open through May 4th. The Program runs from June 11th to 21st, and will take place at CUNY School of Law in Long Island City, Queens. Program Overview: Developed by the award-winning Pipeline to Justice Program, this free two-week session will consist of daily seminars focused on different aspects of the legal field including, but not limited to: analytical writing, oral advocacy, community building and professional skill building. In addition, all program participants will be given metro cards to cover transportation costs during the program and a $450 stipend upon successful completion.

Consistent with CUNY Law’s mission to expand access to justice and educate lawyers in the service of human needs, our goal is to provide students with a broad introduction to the study and practice of law and inspire the next generation of social justice attorneys. Housed at the nation’s premier public interest law school, the Pipeline to Justice Summer Program is the ideal place for a student to embark upon his or her career as an advocate for social change.
